The first stage of modular training:
Your first step to becoming a commercial pilot through the modular training route is obtaining a Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL). You may complete this full or part-time, with your local flying club, or attend an intensive residential course.
A PPL course will consist of a minimum of 45 flight training hours on a small single-engine aircraft, at least 10 of which must be solo (without an instructor). You will learn all the basics of flying and complete the course with a flight test, which will add about another 2½ hours.
In addition, you’ll need to pass nine multiple-choice theoretical exams and a radio-telephony practical test. Once you pass your PPL skill test, you can apply for a licence that allows you to fly solo or with non-fare-paying passengers.
To begin training, you will need to hold a valid class 1 medical certificate with the UK Civil Aviation Authority (or EASA if you are training in Europe).

How much will it cost me?
The price of your PPL training can vary depending on which school you choose to train with and the location of the flight school. On average, a PPL flight training course can cost between £10,000 and £14,000.
We strongly recommend paying as you go rather than depositing large upfront fees with a flying school. If a training provider asks you to pay in advance for a full course, or requests large instalments, get in touch with us – we can offer free, impartial advice.
