It’s a daunting prospect to spend thousands of pounds on training to become a commercial pilot when there’s no guarantee of a flying job. I had originally flown in the RAF and built my 100 hours PIC up, but at the age of 40 I was nervous that I’d be able to land a flying job.

I then heard about the Wings Alliance and they gave me the confidence to go for it, knowing they had my back and would produce a detailed record of my training. I really liked that I could plan my training around my existing job and choose from their list of flying schools.

The team at the Wings Alliance were there to support and mentor me all the way through – to the point where they got my CV and training record in front of the right people at the airlines. It’s then down to you to impress at interview and in your sim assessment. I’m glad to say the APS MCC course I went through truly gave me the skills and confidence to achieve my ambition. The learning curve from CPL/IR to APS MCC is steep, but by the end of the course, I felt proficient and ready to take on an airline assessment.

I’m now flying the Twin Otter at Loganair and getting to do the famous Barra Beach landing, all within a year and a half of starting with the Wings Alliance.

Choosing this modular route meant I kept the total cost down at £75,000.
